Fantastic Opportunity- Middle School Students at Legislative Hall

NEW! Fall Middle School Conference

WHAT?
YMCA of Delaware Youth in Government is proud to announce our new initiative to introduce Delaware's Middle School students to the democratic process. 6-8th grade students will spend the day at Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware and learn about the legislative process, debate, parliamentary procedure, and work with students from across the state to develop solutions to problems they see facing Delaware.

WHO?
Any 6-8th grade student in Delaware. Space is limited to the first 100 registrants. Students are invited to participate with a school or YMCA. If you are interested in bringing a delegation from your school, contact the Youth in Government State Director, Sam Sachs. Suggested group size is 12 or fewer.

WHERE?
Legislative Hall, Dover, Delaware
We are very lucky to have the opportunity to use Delaware's historic Legislative Hall. We ask that students invited to attend with have exemplary behavior and will be able to conduct themselves in a professional manner during the day.

WHEN?
Saturday, November 12th: 9:00am - 5:00pm

COST?
$50 per student. Students will be provided with a conference t-shirt and lunch. Students may bring their own lunch if they would like.

What Teachers Are Saying About Youth in Government(YIG)
"YIG has given so much to my students.  We have seen our program grow from four students to 50 in just four years! This is a testimonial to the quality and experiences this program offers kids. I have seen shy, reserved kids become more confident in their speaking skills and opinions. Even the most vocal kids have potential for growth.  YIG allows them to hone their research, persuasive writing, and debating skills."
Stephanie Messinger, Charter School of Wilmington

"As both an alumni and current YIG advisor for the past decade, I have personally witnessed how YIG positively transforms the lives of students. My sixth grade students often begin the program as timid and shy, but grow into confident young adults. They draft legislation, lobby for important issues, and most importantly, develop confidence in speaking.

Nothing I do in my social studies classroom can replicate the YIG experience. This is why I return every year with a delegation."
Melissa Tracy, Conrad Schools of Science

About Delaware Youth in Government

Weekly meetings begin in December and will continue leading up to the Model Legislative and Judicial conferences in early April 2017, both taking place in Dover, DE at Legislative Hall & Kent County Court House.
